Octavo, title page printed in blue and black, original decorated blue cloth stamped in gold and blind. First edition. Wister, along with Zane Grey and Clarence Mulford, basically invented the modern western novel. His VIRGINIAN (1902) is generally regarded as the first cowboy novel. This is a later work, a collection of nine western stories, in which there is a sense of the failed potential of the optimistic west of his early works. In "At the Sign of the Last Chance," the inhabitants of a depopulated town come to realize that the town and their saloon have died, causing them to bury the saloon's sign. Owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. A bright, clean, very good copy. (#129221).

First Edition. First printing. Octavo (19cm). Blue cloth stamped in blind and gilt; [viii],449,[1]pp. Title page printed in black and blue. With author's signature below halftitle, dated May 28, 1928; author's card laid down on front pastedown, with pencil note; manuscript poem on folded paper tipped in on front free endpaper; and typed poem formerly tipped in on dedication leaf (now neatly detached). Lightly rubbed at spine ends, spine-sunned, dustsoil to top edge, one or two small spots to cloth, else clean and sound: Very Good. First edition of a collection of Western stories, with manuscript and typescript material relating to a dinner party on May 5. The manuscript poem by Wister, "Some Irregular Feet for the Hosts of the Cinderella Party," describes a party to which lawyer George Wharton Pepper and "Charlton" were invited. The unidentified hostess of the party produced a pair of slippers acquired in Paris and offered them to the guest whose feet they fit; Wister won the competition, and wrote this poem in recompense. The typewritten poem, apparently written by the party host, is signed by "J. M. W." Wister and Pepper were both prominent residents of Philadelphia. FPAA p.394. JOHNSON American First Editions p.547.
