Paris, Buisson, (1796/97) - An Cinquième De La République. 8vo. Very nice contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Minor, barely noticeable repair to upper capital and slight bumping to corners. A very nice and clean copy, with only very minor brownspotting. Printed on good paper. With the half-title (bearing the "Décret concernant les Contrefacteurs" on verso). Book plate of Guy de Portuales to inside of front board. (4), 411, (1) pp. The very rare first edition of Diderot's famous novel, "The Nun", which was actually begun as an elaborate practical joke, but which ended up as one of the most famous novels of the period. A great succes-de-scandale, "The Nun" has both fascinated and unsettled the vast reading public since its first appearance. It started out as a series of letters from a fictitious character, the nun Suzanne, to one of Diderot's friends, the Marquis de Crosmare (who Diderot was trying to lure back to Paris), describing her intolerable life in the convent and imploring him to help regain her freedom and her renounce her vows. The fictitious letters were later revised and written in to the novel that we know today. The work was completed in ab. 1780 and was published posthumously in 1796/97, attracting enormous attention and bringing to light a number of issues that had not previously been publically addressed. It focuses on the then-current practice of forcing young women into convents in order to get them out of the way, on the unnatural life of the convents, and on the corruption in religious institutions and among the clergy. As such, it caused an outrage when it appeared and and became an instant succes-de-scandale. "A novel mingling mysticism, madness, sadistic cruelty and nascent sexuality, it gives a scathing insight into the effects of forced vocations and the unnatural life of the convent. A succes de scandale at the end of the eighteenth century, it has attracted and unsettled readers ever since. For Diderot's novel is not simply a story of a young girl with a bad habit" it is also a powerfully emblematic fable about oppression and intolerance. This new translation includes Diderot's all-important prefatory material, which he placed, disconcertingly, at the end of the novel, and which turns what otherwise seems like an exercise in realism into what is now regarded as a masterpiece of proto-modernist fiction." (From the Oxford University Press edition, 2005). Tchemerzine IV:471.
First edition. Tchemerzine, II, 969; Adams, Bibliographie des ?uvres de Diderot, RC1. Written in 1760 and left abandoned by Diderot, this famous novel was found in 1794 and published in the enthusiasm of the extreme anticlericalism of the time. Stigmatising life in convents, the guilty desires of the recluses turning into passions and vices, La Religieuse was seized upon publication. Its success as a scandal was not denied and continued throughout the 19th century. "This lively satire of 18th-century female convent life is a warm apology for individual freedom [.]. This work was the counterpart, said Diderot, of 'Jacques le Fataliste', and he considered it one of his best. He put all his conviction into it". (Dictionnaire des ?uvres, V, 698). Through three stages, which are those of the three convents where she is successively locked up, Suzanne, a sincere Christian, discovers a closed world where religious feelings are perverted. The absence of freedom and contact with the outside world encourages the development of servility, hypocrisy, jealousy and hatred. "However, this novel should not be seen as a purely anti-clerical charge. Diderot's account is coupled with an analysis of the personality changes affecting those who, according to him, are thus alienated. The manifestations of sadism and hysteria are the result, according to Diderot, of the conditions of a monastic life presented as unnatural: it curbs desires, destroys freedom, creates unnatural hierarchies. For Diderot, forcing individuals to live outside society makes them monsters. The novel is therefore at the same time an apology for natural morality and individual freedom. The realism of the analysis is accentuated by a writing style that favours body language: gestures and cries are often more eloquent than words in this pathetic novel in the manner of Richardson?. A fine copy with wide margins preserved in its contemporary binding.

Edition originale
Elle est parvenue à ce stade étrange où l'oeuvre d'art échappe à son créateur, ainsi qu'en conclut Wilson : La Religieuse has its own life to live as a work of art, and is to be appreciated on its own merits (J.-M. Horemans in Diderot et son temps).Bel exemplaire. David Adams, Bibliographie des oeuvres de Diderot, II, RC1 ; Tchemerzine IV, 471.

Vintage French Moyenne poster for the 1966 film. Nominated for a Palme d'Or at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival. A flurry of controversy surrounded the production and release of Rivette's film. Upon facing pressure from the French Catholic Church regarding its critical religious and sexual content, the new Minister of Information, Yvon Bourges, banned its release. As a result, a massive campaign was launched in its defense, eventually leading to the ban being lifted. The story is based on Denis Diderot's eighteenth century novel of the same title. It was conceived as a practical joke, devised by Diderot, to persuade the Marquis de Croismare to return to Paris. He assumed the identity of a desperate young woman forced into a convent and wrote elaborate letters to the Marquis, beseeching him to help her. Eventually, Diderot compiled the letters and built on them to create his novel. Like the film, it too faced censorship, and was not officially published until after the writer's death. Shot on location in Villeneuve-les-Avignon, Gard, France. 23.5 x 31 inches, folded. Near Fine with two manuscript ink and graphite annotations to the verso and light edgewear. Vogel, Film as a Subversive Art.

Swedish version of Diderot's Nun nicely bound in supple half calf & profusely illustrated. "Based in the Eighteenth century, Suzanne Simonin is an intelligent and sensitive sixteen-year-old French girl who is forced against her will into a Catholic convent by her parents. Suzanne's parents initially inform her that she is being sent to the convent for financial reasons, stating it is cheaper for her to become a nun rather than paying a dowry in marriage. However, while in the convent, it is revealed to Suzanne that she is actually there because she is an illegitimate child as her mother committed adultery with another man. By sending Suzanne to the convent, her mother thought she could make amends for her sins by using her daughter as a sacrificial offering for a new salvation." (Wikipedia) 5.25 x 7.5 inches.
