Description :

Under the general editorship of Robert Laffont. Translated by Anne Carter. 295 pages, very well illustrated (some in color), cloth, dj, 10 by 12 inches, very good. From the dj: In words and pictures, here is an exciting panorama of man's daily life across the ages, showing the evolution of his ways and habits of living from prehistoric times to the present. The magnificent illustrations - there are more than 850, including 32 pages in full color - are taken from museums, art galleries, and photographic collections throughout the world. The pictures are skillfully interwoven with the narrative to form a fresh and vivid history of mankind, a brilliant parade that brings before the reader many delightful and unusual participants. Among the figures who stand out sharply in the historical procession through time and space are Akurgal, A Sumerian schoolboy who lived in Ur of the Chaldees two thousand years before Christ; Neferhotep, Lord of the Morning Apartment in the palace of the Pharaoh; Callicles, an Athenian citizen; and Lucius Marcus, a Roman knight. Others are Abu-I-Hasan who lived in 12th century Cairo; Fong T'chang, a civil servant of imperial China; John Wyndham, a clerk of Oxford, and even the Wife of Bath herself. In these pages, we enter in the the daily lives of people in every age, in every part of the world. All doors pen before us, and we step inside palaces and harems, cottages and peasant dwellings, schools and places of worship, shops and bazaars, circuses and theaters. N° de réf. du libraire 15425
