A propos de cet article

In December of 1763, a rough gang of frontiersmen known as the Paxton Boys rode down from Central Pennsylvania to a peaceful settlement of Conestoga Indians on the Susquehanna River and massacred the people there. Many of the Indians of the settlement were not there at the time, so the government, under John Penn, moved any members of the tribe left to the prison in Lancaster for their protection. But within weeks, the angry mob learned of the government's protection, attacked the prison and slaughtered the Indians there. The mob grew larger, adding more and more people as they marched on Philadelphia, intending to kill any Indians there, especially Moravian Indians being protected. Benjamin Franklin, who would later publish a book about the riot, rode out to meet the frontiersmen and hear their grievances. The present book, which is Volume V of the series of Pennsylvania acts published by Miller, is lacking the first twenty or so pages, including the title, as well as numerous pages in the back. Its worn covers are detached, but the book still contains pages 25 to 556. Other than dampstaining to the last section of pages, the interior pages are very good, especially the sections printing the various acts of the assembly relating to the Conestoga Indians and the printed grievances, declarations and remonstrances of the frontiersmen, the early use of the British "riot act" called out on the marchers, the aftermath of the incidents including the assembly passing a scalp bounty in order to appease the frontiersment, etc. This book covers the years 1759 to 1767. A complete copy covered the years 1758 to the 1770s. Folio. Condition as noted.…
