Lee Thayer, born Emma Redington Lee on April 5, 1874, in Troy, Pennsylvania, was a notable American mystery writer renowned for her prolific contributions to the genre during the twentieth century. Growing up in a large family, she received education in art at Cooper Art School and Pratt Institute Art School before embarking on a career as an interior decorator, where she gained recognition for her artistic skills. Thayer's writing journey began with her first book, an illustrated guide for children, followed by her first murder mystery, The Mystery of the Thirteenth Floor, published in 1919, which introduced the detective duo Peter Clancy and his valet Wiggar. Thayer's novels were characterized by their lack of explicit violence or sexual content, appealing to a post-World War I audience looking for engaging stories.
Lee Thayer with co-founder (Henry Thayer) created Decorative Designers, a New York firm that created thousands of book cover designs. The firm was started about 1895 by Henry, Emma joined him the following year, they married in 1909, were divorced in 1932 and DD closed.
