Item description from seller

With Dewey at Manila. And the Complete Story of the Philippines. Life and Glorious Deeds of Admiral George Dewey. By Joseph L. Stickney, Admiral Dewey’s Aid. Fully Illustrated with Photographs. Sold Only Subscription. Philadelphia: Elliott Publishing Company, c. 1899. Decorated binding measures 9.75 x 7”, 8vo. Binding: green cloth, front cover decorated in brown & gold, tinted only, spine design stamped on back cover; leather spine sample mounted on rear paste-down. Arbour, Keith. Canvassing Books, Sample Books, and Subscription Publisher's Ephemera in Collection of Michael Zinman. New York: Haydn Foundation, 1996. #1512, page 391. In fair condition. Boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine collapsed with frayed cloth; staining at head o spine. Gilt lettering and deco moderately rubbed, but still legible. Ownership inscription, in pencil, found on front paste-down. Normal toning in margins; sporadic age-staining. One page of lined leaves in rear exhibits pencil entries; other lined leaves have been torn from binding. Binding intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. A “salesman’s dummy” (also called a salesman’s sample or prospectus) was meant to be taken door-to-door to show prospective subscribers. The front cover of the dummy is identical to the published book, while the text consists of a few pages from the book (primarily those pages with illustrations). Since the sample is thinner than the finished book, the spine samples are instead tipped onto the front pastedown. At the rear of the volume are leaves of ruled paper with the headings intended to be filled with orders. Like all publisher’s prospectuses, this dummy includes only a fraction of the text.
