A propos de cet article

Facsimile of the 1922 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Lakeland, Florida, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the Polk County city of 10,000 people, from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres around Munn Park and the Atlantic Coast Line passenger station out along the railroad to the citrus packing houses, lumber mills, iron works and phosphate plants, and the schools, churches and residential streets around Lake Wire, Lake Mirror, Lake Morton, Lake Beulah, Lake Hunter and Lake Hollingsworth, with Southern College. The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices along Main Street, Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida Avenues, Pine and Cedar Streets round Munn Park - the City Hall, Jail, Police and Fire Department, the Post Office, the Chamber of Commerce, the Auditorium, the Telephone Exchange, the telegraph offices, the Star-Telegram printing office, the Casino moving pictures, the Caroline, Elk, Franklin, Lakeland, Loyal, Marvin, Orange and Thelma hotels, the Dyess, Tremont, New Southern and Buchanan's hotels, the Lake View Inn, the Colonial, Henrietta and Wilsonia apartments and the Business College - through the Atlantic Coast Line passenger station, freight house, repair shops, road master's office, supply warehouse and Tancrede Station, the Southern Express depot, the Florida Citrus Exchange, Lakeland Citrus, Lakeland Citrus Growers' Association and Polk County packing houses, the Southland Citrus Products preserving plant, the Garland, Dugger and Riddle-Palmore lumber mills and the Lakeland Manufacturing Company planing mill, the Mutual and Lakeland iron works, the Florida National Vault artificial-stone works, Cigar Factory No. 455, the Southern Phosphate Lakeland and Standard plants, the Non-Acid Fertilizer and Chemical works, the Federal Ice and Southern Utilities ice plants, the Polk County Dairy, the gas works, the city water and light plant and the Standard, Gulf and Texas oil depots, to the Lakeland Sanitarium and Morrell Hospital, the High School, the Lake Morton School and the Colored Public School, Southern College on Lake Hollingsworth, the Baptist Seminary, the First Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Christian, Roman Catholic, All Saints Episcopal, Cumberland Presbyterian, Grace Lutheran and St. Paul's Lutheran churches and the Mount Pleasant A. M. E., Zion Hill and St. Luke's churches, Booker Washington Park, and the residential streets round Lake Wire, Lake Mirror, Lake Morton, Lake Beulah, Lake Hunter and Lake Hollingsworth. In September 1922 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Lakeland for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the business district at fifty feet to the inch and the outer residential streets at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department, the others covering the city from the business district around Munn Park and the Atlantic Coast Line depot out to the packing houses, mills and shops and the residential streets around Lakes Wire, Mirror, Morton, Beulah, Hunter and Hollingsworth, with Southern College. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Lakeland address back to 1922. 30 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
