3D Engineered Polysaccharides

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art science and technology related to polysaccharide-based 3D-engineered materials, highlighting their fabrication and specific environmental and advanced technological applications. Polysaccharide-based 3D-engineered materials have attracted global interest as sustainable and renewable alternatives to synthetic polymers for diverse and advanced applications. This book provides researchers and scientists with the latest and up-to-date knowledge related to the fabrication and applications of 3D-engineered polysaccharide materials, including hydrogels, 3D/4D printing, aerogels, foams, sponges, and other 3D scaffold materials.

This book aims to address the primary issue currently faced in the market. Although several books are available, there is still no comprehensive scientific reference that systematically covers all aspects of fabricating engineered 3D polysaccharides and their nanocomposite formulations. So, this book solves the potential deficiencies in published books in the market. We provide specialized and up-to-date knowledge not extensively covered in existing publications, addressing the needs of researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals interested in advancing their understanding and advanced applications, such as environmental remediation and advanced engineered applications.

Dr. Mahmoud H. Abu Elella is a Lecturer in Polymer Chemistry at the Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Egypt. He received both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from the same institution in 2016 and 2019, respectively. Recently, he joined the School of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the  University of Reading, UK, as a Postdoctoral Researcher. With over 12 years of research experience in Polymer Science, his work has focused on the synthesis and development of polymer formulations, including grafted copolymers, hydrogels, scaffold materials, polymer nanocomposites, nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid nanoparticles, polymer-coated liposomes, nanoemulsions, polymer-coated silica nanoparticles, and spray-dried microparticle powders for biomedical applications. 

He has also developed mucoadhesive inhalable polymeric powders using two-fluid and three-fluid nozzle spray drying techniques for pulmonary and nasal drug delivery. He has a strong record of interdisciplinary collaboration, project leadership, scientific publication (50+ papers and 25 book chapters, h-index 32), and grant-supported research. He has been recognized as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists (2023-2025). He is experienced in regulatory compliance, analytical characterization, and academic-industry knowledge transfer. He has actively presented his research at several international conferences and seminars, serves as a peer reviewer for high-impact journals, and acts as a lead editor for several edited and authored books with reputable publishers, such as Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, and ACS.

Prof. Dr. Riham R. Mohamed is a full professor of Polymer Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Egypt, with over 25 years of experience in polymer research. Her work focuses on the fabrication of hydrogels and nanocomposites for wastewater treatment and drug delivery systems and the modification of natural polymers for wound healing. She has been teaching both graduate and undergraduate students in science, dental, and pharmacy programs, specifically in “Organic Chemistry” and “Polymer Technology,” since 1999. Dr. Rashad has also conducted extensive research, having completed her master’s and Ph.D. theses in polymer science. She has supervised more than 50 master’s and Ph.D. theses in the field of Polymer Technology. Dr. Rashad leads a strong Polymer Lab with a highly qualified team at the Faculty of Science, Cairo University.

Dr. Nedal Y. Abu-Thabit is an associate professor in the chemical engineering department at Jubail Industrial College, Saudi Arabia. From 2013 to 2018, he was the program director for the Polymer Engineering Technology major. Dr. Nedal has published over 60 research articles and reviews in high-ranked and refereed ISI journals. His research interests are in the interdisciplinary areas of material science, chemistry, nanotechnology, and macromolecular chemistry. Dr. Nedal focuses on applications related to sustainable material developments, green chemistry, water/oil separation, optical chemical sensors, electroactive polymers, isolation and utilization of biopolymers, coatings, and educational chemistry and polymer chemistry. Dr. Nedal has published 4 books and 16 book chapters related to smart materials for diverse advanced technological and industrial applications.
