Little Grey Rabbit Library series. ISBN 0-00-194218-2. Hardcover with illustrated paper-covered boards. Approx. 18 x 14.5 cm. 47 pages. Colour illustrations throughout. Condition: Very Good+. Clean, bright copy with light shelf wear and minor rubbing to extremities. Binding tight. Pages clean and bright with no markings or tears. A charming 1990 gift inscription on the front endpaper: "To Dear Louise on your 5th Birthday 1990 From Uncle Norman & Auntie Betty." This personal touch adds lovely provenance without detracting from the overall appeal. A few very faint handling marks; overall an attractive example of this delightful children's classic. Description & Story: One morning in spring, the Speckledy Hen decides to leave the noisy farmyard and set up home alone in a hollow oak tree. With her frying-pan, sack of meal, and teapot tucked under her wings, she tidies her new house, lays ten beautiful eggs, and broods contentedly?until the cunning Fox arrives. A timeless tale of independence, cleverness, and woodland adventure featuring beloved characters from the Little Grey Rabbit world, including Hare, Fuzzypeg the Hedgehog, Wise Owl, and more. Perfect bedtime reading for ages 4-8. About the Author - Alison Uttley (1884-1976): Born Alice Jane Taylor on 17 December 1884 at Castle Top Farm near Cromford, Derbyshire, Alison Uttley drew heavily on her rural childhood for her stories. One of the first women to graduate from Manchester University (physics, 1906), she became a teacher before marrying James Uttley in 1911. Widowed in 1930, she turned to writing to support herself and her son. Her first book, The Squirrel, the Hare and the Little Grey Rabbit (1929), launched the enduring Little Grey Rabbit series, which eventually spanned over 40 titles. Uttley wrote more than 100 books in total, including the Sam Pig series, A Traveller in Time (1939, a pioneering time-slip novel), and semi-autobiographical works like The Country Child (1931). Her gentle, nostalgic animal tales evoke a pre-industrial English countryside of hedgerows, seasons, and simple pleasures. Though her private diaries later revealed a more complex and sometimes difficult personality, her published work remains beloved for its warmth and charm. About the Illustrator - Margaret Tempest (1892-1982): Margaret Mary Tempest was a gifted British artist and author, best remembered for her iconic illustrations of the Little Grey Rabbit books. Born in Ipswich, Suffolk, she trained at Ipswich School of Art and Westminster School of Art. A co-founder of the Chelsea Illustrators studio, she brought a distinctive, delicate watercolour style to children's literature?soft pastel tones, expressive animal characters in charming period clothing, and beautifully observed countryside scenes. Her collaboration with Alison Uttley began in 1929 and lasted nearly 40 years, defining the visual identity of the series. Tempest also wrote and illustrated her own books (including the Curley Cobbler and Pinky Mouse series) and contributed to many other publications. Her work captures a gentle, timeless English rural idyll that perfectly complements Uttley's storytelling. This 1986/87 Collins "Little Grey Rabbit Library" reprint is part of a smartly redesigned pocket-sized hardcover series with fresh, pretty covers. These editions are prized by collectors for their compact size, high-quality colour plates, and accessibility compared to scarce pre-war first editions. The Speckledy Hen remains one of the most popular titles in the canon. A wonderful addition to any Little Grey Rabbit collection, Beatrix Potter enthusiast's shelf, or as a special gift for a child (or adult) who appreciates classic British children's literature. The personal 1990 birthday inscription makes it especially touching. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1781275306636
