Set in Aberdeenshire in 1915, Elspeth Gray is befriended by Helen Watson on the train to Aberdeen. Mrs Watson, a compassionate woman, takes Elspeth home and looks after her until her baby is born. Unfortunately, Helen's own child is still-born and neighbours assume that Elspeth's son is hers.

Doris Davidson is a retired primary school teacher who still lives in her native city of Aberdeen. She has been writing novels since 1984 and the first to be published was ‘The Brow of Gallowgate’ in 1990. Her married daughter is a civil servant and lives in Surrey, but her son, an art teacher, also lives in Aberdeen, and presented her with a grandson in 1987.
