Rule of Life No. 477: When a woman admits that it's difficult for her to ask for something, leave immediately.
Forgetting his own good advice, trumpet-player Angel (christened Fitzroy Maclean Angel) agrees to help the enigmatic Jo Scamp, a lady of brief but intimate acquaintance. And what begins with the simple recovery of stolen jewellery develops into violence involving a deranged London gangster and a policeman with vendetta.
The nastiness comes unpleasantly close to home, but if you've a working knowledge of the seamy underside of London, a trusty black taxi called Armstrong and a cynical black cat called Springsteen to rely on, you can handle it…Can't you?
"One of the best first novels of the year".
'Times Literary Supplement'

'Sunday Times'
"Brisk, eventful and genuinely funny".
