Synopsis

A rousingly romantic Mediterranean novel of love and war. ‘Even more enchanting than Louis de Bernieres's Captain Correlli's Mandolin, Riotta's novel is a revelation’ (Daily Mail).

Palermo, 1946. Carlo Terzo, a retired military strategist who has never seen combat, is teaching young Salvatore Dragonara military history while Terzo works on his Manual for Strategic Living, in which he hopes to apply the hard lessons of war to daily life.

Salvatore is in love with the young and beautiful Fiore, whose mother, the Duchess Mastema, is a rich and cruel landowner. When Terzo and his friends visit the duchess’s property, they are caught in a pitched battle between the oppressed peasants and the duchess’s hired thugs, and Terzo is forced to put his strategic wisdom to the test…

Like Louis de Bernières' Captain Correlli's Mandolin, Gianni Riotta’s charming and provocative romance explores large and small matters of love and war, shifting between the turbulence of post-war Sicily and the great battles of ancient and modern history. A bestseller in Italy, Prince of the Clouds is a deeply moving work of fiction, imbued with rare vibrancy and feeling.

À propos de la quatrième de couverture

Gianni Riotta's agile, stirring and provocative romance explores matters of love and war, both large and small, darting between the upheavals of post-war Sicily and history's most decisive battles.

Carlo Terzo has spent his life analysing the actions of others in battle, when all he ever wanted was to act himself. A master of the arts of war, he has never yet raised a weapon in anger. In the aftermath of the Second World War, withdrawing to Sicily with his spirited but troubled wife, Carlo hopes to pass on the learning of many years. He finds a protégé in the charismatic Salvatore Dragonara. But Salvatore is a young man drawn more to peace and poetry than strategy and weaponry, and he is desperately in love with the angelic Fiore. But it is to be Fiore's mother, a cruel, reactionary landowner-countess, who is to provide Carlo with the, opportunity at last, to put his strategic wisdom to the test – in practice as much as in theory.

In Carlo Terzo, Riotta has created a hero fit for all, and in 'Prince of the Clouds' an emotionally powerful and classically romantic work of fiction, imbued with rare vibrancy and feeling.
