On 5 October 1853, as the Ottoman Empire declared war on Russia, thereby starting the Crimean War, a new age in warfare began. Dr Duncan Anderson is Head of the Department of War Studies at the RoyalMilitary Academy, Sandhurst. His research interests include 19th and 20th century military history, Logistics, Asymmetrical warfare, Special Forces and the Second World War in the Pacific and North Africa. His previous books include The Battle of Manila 1945 and The Fall of the Reich.
