Synopsis

From the author of the Booker Prize-shortlisted Treacle Walker and the Carnegie Medal and Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize-winning classic, The Owl Service

Three best-loved contemporary classics for boys: ‘Elidor’, ‘The Sword in the Stone’ and ‘The Phantom Tollbooth’ in a gorgeous slipcased gift set.

The Phantom Tollbooth:
Milo’s extraordinary voyage takes him into such places as the Land of Expectation, the Doldrums, the Mountains of Ignorance and the Castle in the Air. He meets the weirdest and most unexpected characters (such as Tock, the watchdog, the Gelatinous Giant, and the Threadbare Excuse, who mumbles the same thing over and over again), and, once home, can hardly wait to try out the Tollbooth again. But will it be still there when he gets back from school

Elidor:
On a gloomy day in Manchester, Roland, Helen, Nicholas and David are lured into a ruined church, where the fabric of time and place is weak enough to allow them into the twilight world of Elidor. It is a place almost destroyed by fear and darkness, and the children are charged with guarding its Treasures while a way is sought to save the dying land.
Then the evil forces find a path through to this world…

The Sword in the Stone:
When Merlyn the magician comes to tutor Sir Ector's sons Kay and the Wart, schoolwork suddenly becomes much more fun. After all, who wouldn't enjoy being turned into a fish, or a badger, or a snake? But Merlyn has very particular plans for the Wart.

À propos des auteurs

Norton Juster was born in New York State in 1929 and grew up (carefully) in Brooklyn, studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and spent a year in Liverpool on a Fulbright Scholarship. After spending three years in the US Navy, he practiced architecture in New York and Massachusetts before teaching architecture and planning. His work includes The Dot and the Line, which was made into an animated film, and a musical adaptation of The Phantom Tollbooth.

Alan Garner was born and still lives in Cheshire, an area which has had a profound effect on his writing and provided the seed of many ideas worked out in his books.

His fourth book, ‘The Owl Service’ brought Alan Garner to everyone’s attention. It won two important literary prizes – The Guardian Award and the Carnegie Medal – and was made into a serial by Granada Television. It has established itself as a classic and Alan Garner as a writer of great distinction.
