Excerpt from The National Income of Communist China The first two chapters of this study are introductory. They are designed to place the estimates in Chapters III in their institutional context on the one hand and their conceptual context on the other. Chapter IV attempts to explore the meaningfulness of the estimates in terms of established prices, and the analytical implications which can be derived therefrom. A preliminary version of the national income accounts developed in this study was published in the May 1958 issue of the Review of Eco homies and Statistics. Since that time a great deal of additional information was released which both permitted and necessitated an ahnost complete revision of the estimates. Given the inevitable lag between completion of a manuscript on the one hand and its processing and publication on the other, we could not take account of data published after mid-1959.
