The acquittal of the four Los Angeles police officers who had been seen by the nation kicking and beating Rodney King on video tape, while 23 other officers looked on, precipitated mob violence and a sustained world-wide outcry against police violence. This study uses this incident and others like it to illustrate the nature of police violence, the extent of its presence in America today, and the possible ways to remedy a problem which is undermining public confidence in police. Skolnick and Fyfe argue that the police should be regarded and should regard themselves as officers deriving their authority from the law, obliged to acknowledge its moral force and constraints. They situate police use of excessive force in its historical perspective and explore the cultural world of policing - how the values and understandings police learn as they assume their jobs affect both attitude and performance.

Hardcover. First edition. First printing [stated]. Sewn binding. Paper over boards. xviii, 313, [1] p. Notes. Index. From Wikipedia: "Jerome Herbert Skolnick (born in 1931) is a professor at New York University and a former president of the American Society of Criminology. He is also affiliated with the University of California. Skolnick has argued that clearance rates encourage police to focus on appearing to do their job, rather than on actually doing their job. He noted one incident where police coerced a man to confess to over 400 burglaries. From Wikipedia: "James J. Fyfe (February 16, 1942 November 12, 2005) was a well-known criminologist, an authority on the police use of force and police accountability, and a police administrator. His research on the police use of deadly force has been cited extensively, most notably in the Supreme Court case of Tennessee v. Garner, in which the Court ruled as unconstitutional police policies that allow officers to shoot to kill "fleeing felons" who do not pose an immediate danger. The Supreme Court cited his dissertation in its majority opinion." Good in good dust jacket. Price clipped. Highlighting/underlining. DJ has wear, soiling and has been taped to the boards.
