James Meade, awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1977, has over five decades written and published on theoretical and applied problems in most fields of economics. He has always been as concerned with problems of economic policy as with purely theoretical issues, and was one of the early British economists to serve in government, in the wartime Economic Section of the Cabinet Office, of which he became Director immediately after World War II, succeeding Lionel Robbins. This is the first of four volumes of his Collected Papers, containing his most important work on theoretical and applied aspects of employment and inflation from 1933-1985. His contribution to the pioneering work of Richard Stone and himself on the first official national income and expenditure accounts for the UK is included, as are his major contributions to wartime planning of postwar employment policy (which resulted in the 1944 White Paper on Employment Policy). Other contributions range from pre-war papers on Keynesian economics to his proposals for tackling "stagflation" in the 1970s and 1980s. As many of Meade's published works are not now easily obtainable, their inclusion with the unpublished material should provide a valuable source of reference for economists and for economic and political historians.
