This is an exploration of traditional Indian religion and culture based on public lectures delivered at the University of Oxford. Hardy used his own original research conducted over some 20 years and has aimed at presenting the widest possible range of themes that have preoccupied Indian culture. He drew on sources in various languages, classical Sanskrit texts, folk and religious stories, myths and poetry aiming to open up India to the non-specialist by making the three primary human drives of power, love and wisdom his focal points. Individual themes are also often illustrated from relevant Occidental sources.
