This is the autobiography of left-arm swing bowler John Kenneth Lever, who is still going strong 22 years after making his county debut. He played his first championship game for Essex in 1967 under the captaincy of Brian "Tonker" Taylor alongside such future stalwarts as Keith Fletcher, Ray East, Stuart Turner and David Acfield, who were to form the backbone of the championship and cup-winning sides of the eighties. He tells us what really happened during the "Vaseline Test", he discusses how the rebel tour to South Africa was hatched, he analyzes the test captains he has played under such as Brearley, Botham, Gower, Fletcher and Gatting, and he examines the Gooch phenomenon. Finally, he offers views on the decline of the England test team and points the way forward for the first-class game.
