9780044450566: The Power of Geography: How Territory Shapes Social Life

Synopsis

This collection of essays demonstrates how territory (defined as geographically-organized human activity) shapes social life, and explores some of the consequences of this shaping. It elucidates how routine practices of daily living in the realm of social reproduction - gender, family, education, tradition, culture and ethnicity - within territorial limits are effective in maintaining and reproducing the social order of contemporary capitalism. The editors see one of the aims of this book as being a contribution towards the reconstruction of social theory in the light of increasing complexity of interaction between society and space. They hope to provide new focus on contemporary capitalist society. This work provides a demonstration of the territorially-dependent nature of the political, social and economic spheres of human activity.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book illuminates the profound influence of geography on everyday life. Concentrating on the realm of social reproduction – gender, family, education, culture and tradition, race, ethnicity the contributors provide both an articulation of a theory of territory and reproduction and concrete empirical analyses of the evolution of social practices in particular places.

At the core of the book’s contribution is the concept of society as a ‘time-space’ fabric, upon which are engraved the processes of political, economic and socio-cultural life. A second distinctive feature of the book is its substantive focus on the relation between territory and social practice. Thirdly, it represents a significant step in the redefinition of the research agenda in human geography.
