Plates. 292 pages clean and tight. This is the first full-length biography of James Bronterre O'Brien, the Chartist leader and Radical agitator. In the turmoil of political unrest in the early nineteenth century O'Brien stood out as a major figure. As editor of the Poor Man's Guardian he was involved in the Reform Bill struggle and the fight to abolish taxes on the press; his fiery articles under the pen-name 'Bronterre' soon made him into one of the Chartists' leaders and heroes; and when the People's Charter was published in 1838, many of his ideals were contained in it. For a time O'Brien shared the leadership of the Chartist movement with Feargus O'Connor, his articles in O'Connor's Northern Star and in other Radical papers giving continual 'political instruction' and inspiration to working people throughout the country. Always a staunch Chartist and zealous reformer, Bronterre O'Brien was one of the makers of the Britain we know today. Alfred Plummer is a leading authority on Bronterre O'Brien. After many years of research he has produced this extremely important biography, which also gives a vivid and authentic picture of political life in the reigns of William IV and Victoria. It will be invaluable to students of nineteenth-century British social and political history, and should also appeal to all interested in the development of democracy. 'An indispensable biography of one of the most interesting Chartist leaders.' Professor Asa Briggs. Size: 8vo. N° de réf. du vendeur 143597
