The sequel-of-sorts to his landmark debut, it is one of Stanley Kauffmann's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Stanley Kauffmann's "Figures of Light: Film Criticism And Comment". Continuing criticism and appraisal on the First Golden Age of cinema, as it closes the tumultuous and effervescent Sixties. As such: "Represents a new way to care and think about films" (Jerzy Kosinski). Often dubbed the "Anti-Kael", it is probably more accurate to describe Stanley Kauffmann as the Un-Kael (as in the Un-Cola) as he wasn't actually at loggerheads with Pauline, just different temperamentally and sensibly from the latter. Still, Stanley Kauffmann's film criticism is indeed coolly opposite versus the overheated, Pop sensibility-inspired writings of the immensely influential Pauline Kael. Kauffmann reviewed films for the New Republic Magazine continuously for more than eight decades, up until his death. His reviews were all single-page, pithy, and incisive pieces, succinct mini-essays characterized by wit, aphoristic intelligence, and an openness to the pleasures of cinema as well as an awareness of its shortcomings, pitfalls, and inevitable pretensions. His longer pieces, mostly written for his books, are no less valuable for their reach and in-depth critical wisdom. At his best, Stanley Kauffmann was the epigrammatic embodiment of the history of serious, non-academic criticism of 20th America. His creative and critical life spanned eight decades: Since 1958, he was the film and drama critic for The New Republic, The New York Times, and Saturday Review. He was also an actor, stage manager, playwright, novelist, and editor. Along with Dwight Macdonald, Andrew Sarris, and John Simon, he remains - for OUR time - one of the indispensable voices of the New York School of twentieth-century American criticism. A sustained reflection on the art of film, reified in the works of now-legendary Masters, this is a book that deserves and demands to be read and re-read for pleasure, illumination, and joy.
