DESCRIPTION - Regular readers of The New Yorker will be familiar with many of John McGahern's fine short stories. The eleven stories in this collection are set in McGahern's native Ireland and many of them are concerned with the fragile relationships between men and women - the difficulty of their coming together, the impossibility of commitment, the certainty of loneliness. There is Irish stubbornness, Irish raffishness, and, especially, McGahern's subtle Irish wit. In 'All Sorts of Impossible Things' an instructor born with his heart on the wrong side stubbornly insists on taking his exam despite serious illness. His friend during a sickbed visit senses 'the bloom of death' and asks to keep the instructor's lovely racing hound for him. The death releases in the friend an excitement he can scarcely contain. 'The Stoat' has chased a particular rabbit to exhaustion and finally the rabbit waits for the stoat to cut its jugular. The young man who kindly kills the rabbit goes home to find that his widowed father wants to marry again and has taken an ad in the paper. The candidates are ludicrous, but finally there's a sweet rheumatic lady who fits the bill. When she has a mild heart attack, the father deserts her and so does the son - a family of desperate rabbits. These are strong, finely wrought stories from one of the best Irish writers of this century. inventory #5421. N° de réf. du vendeur z5421
