The Sonnets
135
WHo ever hath her wifh, thou haft thy will,
And Will too boote, and Will in oucr-plus,
More then enough am i that vexe thee ftill,
To thv sweet will making addition thus.
Wilt thou whofe will is large and spatious,
Not once vouchfafe to hide my will in thine,
Shall will in others feeme right gracious,
And in my will no faire acceptance shine:
The sea all water, yet receiues raine still,
And in aboundance addeth to his store,
So thou beeing rich in Will adde to thy Will,
One will ofrcine to make thy large Will more.
Let no vakinde, no faire beseechers kill,
Thinke all but one, and me in that one Will.
The playfully autobiographical (and wittily obscene) Sonnet 135 in its original form in the 1609 quarto, a good example of the ambiguities of early modern typography.

'These tapes are invaluable not just because of the quality of the diction and presentation but because they are based on the complete text as established by Philip Edwards for the New Cambridge Shakespeare edition of the plays. They may be used in conjunction with the plays or simply listened to for the sheer joy of hearing Shakespeare's wonderful language without having to endure the absurdities of so many modern productions.' Contemporary Review
'Well worth acquiring for any good audio collection.' AVL-Multimedia Information

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. Shakespeare's sonnets are the most famous collection of love poems in the English language. Here Shakespeare celebrated his passionate friendship with a young man, deplored his friend's seduction by Shakespeare's own mistress, expressed his chagrin at the friend's relationship with a rival poet, and in the final group of poems explored his own humiliated infatuation with "a woman colored ill"--the Dark Lady who has tempted his "better angel" from him. Lyrically beautiful and psychologically fascinating, the sonnets exert a double appeal: as individual poems, and as a complexly interrelated sequence. All 154 poems are presented here in a freshly edited text, along with Shakespeare's wry, touching portrait of a forsaken maiden in A Lover's Complaint, a poem first printed with the sonnets in 1609. This volume also includes little-known alternative versions of four of the sonnets. The text of this edition is that prepared for the forthcoming Complete Oxford Shakespeare.
