9780060199166: The Sheltering Sky

Synopsis

The Sheltering Sky is one of the most original, even visionary, works of fiction to appear in the twentieth century.” —Tobias Wolff

"It stands head and shoulders above most other novels published in English since World War II.” —New Republic

In this classic work of psychological terror, Paul Bowles examines the ways in which Americans apprehend other cultures--and the ways in which their incomprehension destroys them. The story of three American travelers adrift in the cities and deserts of North Africa after World War II, The Sheltering Sky is at once merciless and heartbreaking in its compassion. It etches the limits of human reason and intelligence--perhaps even the limits of human life --when they touch the unfathomable emptiness and impassive cruelty of the dessert.

À propos de l?auteur

Paul Bowles was born in 1910 and studied music with composer Aaron Copland before moving to Tangier, Morocco. A devastatingly imaginative observer of the West's encounter with the East, he is the author of four highly acclaimed novels: The Sheltering Sky, Let It Come Down, The Spider's House, and Up Above the World. In addition to being one of the most powerful postwar American novelists, Bowles was an acclaimed composer, a travel writer, a poet, a translator, and a short story writer. He died in Morocco in 1999.

À propos de la quatrième de couverture

When The Sheltering Sky was first published in 1949, it established Paul Bowles as one of the most singular and promising writers of the postwar generation. Its startlingly original vision has withstood the test of time and confirmed Tennessee Williams's early estimation: "The Sheltering Sky alone of the books that I have . . . read by American authors appears to bear the spiritual imprint of recent history in the western world." In this classic work of psychological terror, Bowles examines the ways in which Americans apprehend an alien culture and the ways in which their incomprehension destroys them.

The story of three worldly young travelers Port Moresby, his wife, Kit, and their friend, Tunner--adrift in the cities and deserts of North Africa after World War II, The Sheltering Sky is merciless in its evocation of the emotional dislocation induced by a foreign setting. As the Americans embark on an ill-fated journey through desolate terrain, they are pushed to the limits of human reason and intelligence by the unfathomable emptiness and impassive cruelty of the desert. Along the way, they encounter a host of enigmatic characters whose inarticulate strangeness seals the travelers off even more completely from the culture in which they are traveling, causing their fierce attachments to one another to unravel.

This special fiftieth anniversary commemorative edition of Bowles's unforgettable first novel includes the original New York Times review by Tennessee Williams and a preface the author wrote for his first novel before he died in 1999.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. For what it's worth, this is a First Edition of the Anniversary Edition (Stated First Edition with a Number Line to 1). The book was originally published in 1949. Both the book and dust jacket are in excellent condition. Beginning with the book, you can see the covers in the photos. They are perfectly clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges are in very good condition, one tiny nick on each of the top and bottom ones, no rubbing. None on the corners either, they are in excellent condition. There is a little crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The page edges are exceptionally clean. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The white inside covers and end papers are perfectly clean. The same goes for all the pages in the book. They are bright and free of any soiling. I'm also not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The dust jacket is in terrific shape. You can see it in the first few photos. It looks perfectly clean. I'm not seeing any conspicuous wear. There are no creases. There is one little crinkle below the top edge of the spine. The flaps are in excellent shape, perfectly clean, no tears no creases. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. Check out the blurbs on the rear cover. Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. The Modern Library also included it on their 100 best of the century. The novel was adapted by Bernardo Bertolucci into a 1990 film with the same title starring Debra Winger and John Malkovich. N° de réf. du vendeur 005449
