Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) was born in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He studied at the University of Freiburg and became a professor at the University of Marburg in 1932. After publishing his his magnum opus, Being and Time (1927), he returned to Freiburg to assume the chair of philosophy upon Husserl's retirement.
"For an acquaintance with the thought of Heidegger, What Is Called Thinking? is as important as Being and Time. It is the only systematic presentation of the thinker's late philosophy and . . . it is perhaps the most exciting of his books."--Hannah Arendt

(Was heißt Denken?) is a seminal 1954 book by German philosopher Martin Heidegger based on 1951-1952 lectures, arguing that "we are still not thinking" because modern, rigid scientific reasoning has replaced authentic thought. Heidegger defines true thinking as a receptive, non-technical engagement with Being?a "thanking" and "remembering" (Andenken) that allows things to reveal themselves, rather than merely calculating, measuring, or mastering them.
