Written as a response to the increasing number of books that supposedly reveal the 'real' historical nature of Jesus, this volume effectively demolishes the reliability of the 'historical criticism' technique that has been touted as some sort of magic formula that can lead to the Gospels being discounted as fact. Johnson demonstrates that underlying all the New Testament books is the theme of Jesus as the suffering, dying and resurrected saviour. They are not meant to be read as historical documents but articles of faith that recount early Christian's spiritual experiences and revelations. Paul is shown not to be the founder of Christianity who imposed his beliefs on other communities of Christians but instead someone who was communicating with others who ALREADY shared the belief as Jesus as the risen Christ.
