Synopsis

A reissue of bestselling, award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates' classic collection of essays on boxing.

Oates examines the relentless physical demands of the ring, observing contenders from small-town training gyms to title bouts at Madison Square Garden.

The essays follow figures such as Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson through the grueling discipline and rapid public ascents that define their careers.

Ringside crowds gather across decades of bouts as Oates records the ritualized combat of heavyweight champions and journeyman opponents alike. The book captures the austere solitary training camps and the stark theater of an uncompromising American sport.

  • Social History: Oates investigates the 1938 Yankee Stadium rematch between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, detailing how a global radio audience watched an athletic contest become an ideological clash between the United States and Nazi Germany.
  • Against the Odds: The account revisits Jack Johnson’s pursuit of Tommy Burns to Sydney, Australia in 1908, capturing the racial hostility and technical brilliance surrounding the first black heavyweight champion’s victory.
  • Literary Criticism: The collection reflects on classic boxing literature, weighing Norman Mailer’s ringside dispatches and Ernest Hemingway’s fiction against the unvarnished realities of the prize ring.
  • Case Studies: Oates examines the crucial authority of the referee as the impartial third man in the ring, holding the sole power to intervene when a defenseless fighter faces catastrophic punishment.
