Soft cover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. Edward Hyams approaches human history through the relationship between civilization, agriculture, and the soil upon which societies depend. Originally published in 1952, the book surveys the environmental foundations of civilizations and considers the consequences of erosion, soil exhaustion, unsustainable agriculture, and human attempts to dominate natural systems. Hyams combines ecological history with social and agricultural history, arguing that the condition of the land has repeatedly influenced the prosperity and decline of human societies. This is the first Harper Colophon edition, published in 1976, with a new preface for this edition. The number line shown runs through "1," confirming a first printing of the Harper Colophon issue. The edition contains 312 pages and is cataloged under ISBN 0-06-090458-5. Condition: Good. Original illustrated wrappers show moderate rubbing, shelf wear and edge wear, with small areas of loss and abrasion along the extremities. Spine remains intact with light rubbing and wear. Interior shows age toning. Previous ownership information near the upper portion of the title/copyright area has been heavily obscured with black marker; an additional small marking is visible near the lower corner of the title page. Binding appears sound and pages shown remain otherwise clean and readable. No extensive text annotation observed. Collector / Significance: Soil and Civilization is an early ecological interpretation of world history and is of continuing interest in environmental history, soil conservation, agriculture, organic farming, human ecology, and sustainability studies. The 1976 Harper Colophon issue is a desirable later edition because it includes the author's revised material and belongs to the period when environmental history was becoming a more distinct field of study. Current dealers specifically describe the 1976 issue as the first Harper Colophon edition/first printing. Book will be carefully packed and protected for shipment. Originally published in 1952, Hyams approached world history through the lens of soil ecology and environmental sustainability decades before such perspectives entered mainstream academic discourse making this work an early precursor to the environmental humanities and ecological criticism fields. This 1976 First Harper Colophon Edition brings Hyams's text to a wider paperback audience with a revised preface, black-and-white maps, notes, and index. The Harper Colophon Books CN 458 issue reflects the era's growing interest in ecology and environmental studies, and the work's analysis of soil depletion, agricultural collapse, and civilization decline remains relevant to contemporary environmental scholarship.
