An abridged edition of the world's bestselling original thesaurus. This completely revised and updated edition contains over 230,000 words, nearly three thousand of which are newly added.
The revolutionary achievement of Dr Roget was his development of a brand new principle: the grouping of words according to ideas. If the user cannot find something in a reference book, it is often because of the restriction of searching alphabetically by 'known' headwords. Dr Roget's thesaurus reversed the access to allow the user to find a word from another word, a concept or an idea.
This ultimate reference tool – the best–selling thesaurus ever in all its editions – contains over 230,000 words and phrases, nearly 3000 of which are new to this edition, grouped into 1072 numbered categories. Within each category you'll find all the parts of speech, frequent cross–references, commonly used words singled out in boldface, and much more. If you're a writer who needs help organising a thought or mastering the nuance of expression, the International Thesaurus remains the first source to turn to.
Barbara Ann Kipfer, Ph.D., is a lexicographer who has authored or compiled more than forty books, including the Dictionary of American Slang (with Robert L. Chapman), The Order of Things, Writer's Digest Flip Dictionary, and the bestselling 14,000 Things to Be Happy About. She received her doctorate in linguistics from England's University of Exeter.

Robert Lundquist Chapman (December 28, 1920 - January 27, 2002) was an American professor of English literature who edited several dictionaries and thesauri. Chapman taught English at Cornell University, Oswego State Teachers College, Wilkes College, and Drew University, with whom he became a professor emeritus in 1986. Chapman held full-time editing positions. From 1960 to 1964, he worked for Funk & Wagnalls, where he served as a supervising editor for Funk & Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary. Chapman edited the fourth and fifth editions of Roget's Thesaurus, published by HarperCollins in 1977 and 1992. Chapman retained Roget's original system of numbered categories rather than use an alphabetical system, which he found "jejune". To the fifth edition, he added thirty new categories and over 50,000 new words, such as ecosystem and yuppie. Chapman also edited HarperCollins' New Dictionary of American Slang (1986), the Thesaurus of American Slang (1989), and Roget A to Z (1994). Barbara Ann Kipfer, who edited the sixth edition of Roget's Thesaurus, noted that Chapman was one of the first lexicographers to regularly use computer databases to study words as used in the popular press Roget's Thesaurus is a widely used English-language thesaurus, created in 1805 by Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869), British physician, natural theologian and lexicographer. It was released to the public on 29 April 1852. Roget was inspired by the Utilitarian teachings of Jeremy Bentham and wished to help "those who are painfully groping their way and struggling with the difficulties of composition . this work processes to hold out a helping hand". The Karpeles Library Museum houses the original manuscript in its collection. Roget's schema of classes and their subdivisions is based on the philosophical work of Leibniz (see Leibniz § Symbolic thought),[citation needed] itself following a long tradition of epistemological work starting with Aristotle. Some of Aristotle's Categories are included in Roget's first class, "abstract relations" Fifth Edition, completely revised and updated [stated]. Fifth printing [stated]. N° de réf. du vendeur 88512
