In these notebooks he recorded in shorthand views comrnunicated by Ludwig Wrttgenstem to Waismann himself and to Moritz Schlick. The material takes a varrety of forms: some of it consists in conversations or arguments between the three, some of questions by Schlick or Waismann with answers by Wittgenstein, some of Wittgenstein's comments on passages read to him by Waismann or on works of himself or others that had evidently been mentioned. Much of it is simply an account of Wittgenstein's views evidently taken down as he expressed them in a vivid conversational style. The material has considerable historical interest. Most of it is dated, sometimes showing us what Wittgenstein was thinking at times for which we have no other source. It comes from the same transitional period as the Philosophische Bemerkungen. Many of the doctrines of the Tractatus are defended and expounded in it; others are criticized and withdrawn. Moreover, here (as in no other material that has been heard of) one can see how Wittgenstein reacted to probing questions, criticisms and objections. The book also has historical interest in a quite different way: it has long been known that Wittgenstein's vacations from Cambridge were partly occupied in talks with some members of the Vienna Circle, talks to which a qreat deal of influence on the views of that group has been ascribed. Here, one has the actual record of these conversations and is able to judge their general effect and purport. One can see what sort of conversation it was in which Wittgenstein ennunciated (perhaps for the first time) the view that the sense of proposition was the method of its verification.
