This text is for an undergraduate course called Introduction to Programming, Introduction to Computer Science or Ada Programming offered in computer science, maths, physics or engineering departments. It covers the standard topics of the CSI course-basic concepts of computer systems including problem solving and algorithm development, program structures, data types and introduction to searching and sorting. The principle pedagogical device employed throughout the text is the example program or program segment to facilitate introducing and explaining a new language. The text demonstrates how program action, along with their associated data, may be localized by means of subprograms, but also shows how program data, along with their associated actions, may be localized by means of packages. Exercises challenge the student to experiment with the language, the Ada system and surrounding operating system. New topics are introduced by examining a problem or concept and attempting to deal with it via available programming techniques, prior to disclosing a new feature itself. Features specific to the Ada language are introduced. All example programs are contained on one 3.5 " IBM disk packaged with the book.
