U.S. insistence at Iraq's constant stubborness to disclose its nuclear potential reflects Western unease at the increased activity of Third World arms producers and exporers. While several books have appeared on the subject of arms industries outside the West, this is the first to focus specifically on the Arab countries. "Arab military industry", written in association with the Centre for Arab Unity Studies, reveals the enormous military potential of the region. It provides a comprehensive overview of the patterns of arms production in the Third World and uses this to evaluate the comparative performance and options of the Arab countries. By examining the strategic setting for Arab defence production, detailing the activities and performance of local arms industries, Yezid Sayigh offers an assessment of Arab military industrialization past, present and future. He concludes that Arab countries will be frustrated in their desire to emulate foreign military development until the right industrial environment is created. Yet this requires fundamental economic, social and political change, and a wholly new approach to defence and development, and so remains some way off.
