This work looks at the Soviet Union as it finds itself at a key-point in its history. Throughout the country a slow renaissance is taking place, and the author attempts to analyze in which directions the Soviet Union is likely to be moving in 1988 and beyond. Tariq Ali was one of the best-known radicals of the 60s. He has been associated with many of the major figures of the period, from Che Guevara and Ho Chi Minh to Bertrand Russell. He is on the editorial staff of "New Left Review". He also wrote "The Nehrus and the Ghandis" and "Street Fighting Years: An Autobiography of the Sixties".

Cloth. Etat : Near Fine. Illustrated Cover art! (illustrateur). First Softcover Edition & 1st Printing. 255 pages. (315 grams) "An incisive account of the political transformation occuring in the Soviet Union in 1988, prior to the fall of the Communist regime, which argues that Gorbachev represented a progressive, reformist current within the Soviet elite, whose program, if successful, would have represented an enormous gain for socialists and democrats on a world scale, and that Gorbachev had to complete the political revolution already under way by abolishing the entire nomenklatura system of privileges on which the power of the Soviet bureaucracy rested; Ali, a member of the editorial committee of New Left Review, visited the Soviet Union twice in 1988 as a guest of the Writers Union and observed the changes then underway; includes illustrations and appendices."
