Paperback. 'Umpires are, by definition, conservative, deadpan, dour characters who never seem to be enjoying themselves, while all around there is excitement, commitment and battles to the death. So why do we do it? Let me share with you the sheer delight and joy that cricket has given me, albeit on a rollercoaster ride, around all the famous grounds and literally among the most famous players in the world."From the truth behind the Muralidharan throwing affair which caused as much of a stir as the Bodyline series of the 1930s to the battle for supremacy between Australia and the West Indies and umpiring with Dickie Bird at Lords during his final test, this is a cricket story which is not bound by the usual constraints imposed on the players in telling their stories.Darrell Hair, Australia's best known cricket umpire, also looks at the issues of sledging and independent umpiring, the future of cricket and the great performances from the middle ground. Frank, fresh and fascinating, this is a cricket book with a welcome difference. SALES POINTS:* First ever book from an Australian cricket umpire* Dickie Bird's book a huge success - this book contains a chapter on working with Dickie Bird* Is not constrained by all the usual rules which apply to the cricketers themselves when they write their books* Tackles issues like sledging, the throwing affair in which Hair was embroiled* Great extract material* Hair will be touring around the country umpiring over summer and we will get him on all radio/tv etc* Genuinely interesting cricket book'ABOUT THE AUTHOR:When not touring around the world umpiring Darrell Hair runs a clothing company and resides in Sydney 1998, First edition, first printing. A near fine copy. N° de réf. du vendeur 25989231
