Well I remember how she blew in off the track that windy day more than a year ago, borne in like a thistle seed on the hot winds that beat in from the north, clothed in nothing but the green cotton dress that flicked and chopped about her, a patched and faded relic of some other person's life, and she carrying nothing, bringing nothing of her own but her taut bare freckled body and sandwhipped hair in auburn steaks that ran before her in the wind .477. Eileen's arrival at the struggling soldier-settler farm on the edges of the salt lakes causes a stir. The boy is fascinated by her, his mother disapproving, and Joe -- the boy's idol -- wants to possess her. But then Eileen disappears. 'It's Eileen's dress. Come quick, it's Eileen's dress.' 'Look! It's all bloody!' 'Move away from there! Come away!' .477. After hours of moving straight but seemingly in a circle, or moving in a circle while seeking a straight line .477. everything that was there began to tell you that you were not, and that time and place and direction were not,and that all the familiar seams that lay across your thinking were fraying with each sightless ridge you passed. And Cabel told him that until you began to bend your understanding to the forest, until you learned to move amid the forest like the water in the sea or as a wave across the stream, you would answer to its menace with thin curses and in such feeble incantations as would just run out like spilt water into the thickness of the sand.
