Etat : Very Good. 92, 4 fold-out b/w plates, 47 col + b/w plates, 42 figs. . HB. 4to, orig, cloth. Vg in torn d/w (in removable protective sleeve). First edition. The Devonshire Hunting Tapestries are among the most famous surviving examples of late medieval tapestry art. They are a set of four enormous 15th-century tapestries, now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Believed to have been made in Arras (present-day Belgium), around the mid-15th century, they were owned by the Cavendish family of Chatsworth, Derbyshire. The subject matter is hunting- falconry, boar, bear, and deer hunts- which was central to aristocratic culture. The subject matter is the noble pastime of hunting- falconry, boar, bear, and deer hunts -which was central to aristocratic culture. The images provide insight into the rituals, costumes, and social structures of the medieval elite. The clothing depicted is especially valuable for costume historians since it shows detailed fashions of the Burgundian court. [9780112900375]. N° de réf. du vendeur S63145

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in great condition. Pages in excellent condition. Blank cover page has some dust marking but otherwise book is clear and bright. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> The famous medieval tapestries with hunting subjects which belonged to the Dukes of Devonshire and were at Hardwick Hall before being acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1957 are the subject of this monograph. Dating from before the middle of the fifteenth century, their great size and the vigour of their design, conceived entirely without perspective, give them their unique interest. It has been claimed that they are to be associated with Henry VI's marriage to Margaret of Anjou; this and their attribution to the looms of Arras are here discussed. Also their place in the chronology of tapestry design, a section which is illustrated with eighteen of the finest secular pieces between 1400 and 1521. A chapter on the practices of medieval hunting and hawking adds colour to the scenes which are here described; the commentary on the notable costume worn by the lords and ladies who take the field is supplemented with a d.
