This is the first comprehensive guide to the records of Parliament to be published. It deals with the manuscript and printed records of both Lords and Common, and also with other classes of document preserved within the Palace of Westminister. The documents range range in date from the middle ages to the session of 1969-70 and include several types of records only recently made available for research in the House of Lords Record Office. The records concern debates and other proceedings within Parliament which principally relate to the British Isles, the countries of the Commonwealth, and (for the 17th and 18th centuries) the American colonies. They include information of the highest value for almost every aspect of social and economic as well as constitutional history and contain much little-used source material that is of value for local studies. The arrangement throughout the Guide is by administrative provenance. Each major class of document is prefaced by notes on Parliamentary procedure which help to explain its origin and nature; there is a detailed index; and there are illustrations of some of the most important types of record.
