In the 1940s, techniques for the analysis and synthesis of industrial systems of any degree of complexity were simplistic, at best, and so were the system models. Other essential techniques, such as the detection and diagnosis of industrial plant failures, represented, for all practical purposes, a void in available methods. The industrial systems of the 1940s were relatively unsophisticated by comparison with the industrial systems of the 1990s. Numerous key advances have occurred since that provide considerable power in the effective control of complex industrial systems. These include advances in computers, electronics, communications, sensor systems, and systems techniques. The increasing complexity of industrial systems over the past few decades was recognized and covered in earlier volumes of this series. Because of the advances in techniques for industrial systems control, "Advances in Industrial Systems" reviews this area.
