Interference whether caused by natural sources (such as lightning static, atmospheric noise, temperature inversions) or artificial ones (other RF/wireless transmitters, electrical machinery, etc.) has plagued RF/wireless communications since the days of Marconi. But it has taken on a special urgency as more wireless services, especially broadband digital ones, come on line; new digital services, such as WiFi and WiMax, are far less tolerant of interference than analog transmission modes (like AM and FM radio).Because of this, a solid knowledge of the causes of RF interference and techniques for mitigating it is becoming vital knowledge for RF/wireless professionals.
