9780131497597: Prestressed Concrete: A Fundamental Approach

Synopsis

For one-semester, senior/graduate-level courses in Prestressed Concrete departments of Civil Engineering.

Completely revised to reflect the new ACI 318-05 Building Code and International Building Code, IBC 2003, this popular text offers a unique approach to examining the design of prestressed concrete members in a logical, step-by-step trial and adjustment procedure. Encouraging clear, systematic thinking, it integrates handy flow charts to help students better understand the steps needed for design and analysis. In addition, the major topics of material behavior, prestress losses, flexure, shear, torsion, and deflection-camber are sequentially self-contained and can be covered in one semester at the senior and graduate levels.

Quatrième de couverture

A state-of-the-art book written by a national and international expert on concrete structures and materials, this fourth edition of Prestressed Concrete-A Fundamental Approach reflects the very latest ACI 318-02 Code and International Building Code IBC 2000-2003. It puts at the disposal of the user the author's many years of professional and academic know-how in design, construction, and forensic engineering.

This book is different from most because its major topics of material behavior, prestress losses, flexure, shear, torsion, and deflection-camber are sequentially self-contained and can be covered in one semester at the senior and the graduate levels. It uniquely follows procedures given in over 20 flowcharts and 400 illustrations that simplify the understanding and application of the subject in design, using both the customary US and the SI units in the examples.

Additionally, you will find:

  • All examples are revised in this edition to conform to the new ACI 318-02 Strain Limits Method in the flexural design of prestressed concrete members.
  • A detailed chapter on the design of statically indeterminate prestressed beams and portal frames.
  • A revised chapter containing the latest ACI and AASHTO Provisions on the design of post-tensioned beam anchorage end blocks using the strut-and-tie approach. A revised chapter on slender columns including a simplified load-contour biaxial bending method.
  • A chapter with comprehensive design examples on LRFD and standard design of bridge deck members for flexure, shear and torsion, conforming to the latest AASHTO specifications.
  • A chapter on seismic design of ductile prestressed concrete frames and shear walls in high seismicity zones conforming to the latest IBC 2000-2003 and ACI 318-02 Codes.
  • A comprehensive chapter on the design of prestressed concrete tanks and shell roofs.

About the Author

Edward G. Nawy is a distinguished professor with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He has been active in the ACI and PCI since 1949 and is internationally recognized for his extensive work in the fields of reinforced and prestressed concrete, particularly in the areas of crack and deflection control. Dr. Nawy has published more than 160 papers in numerous technical journals worldwide. He is also the author of several books: Reinforced Concrete-A Fundamental Approach, Fifth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2003), Fundamentals of High Performance Concrete, Second Edition (John Wiley & Sons, 2000), and Concrete Construction Engineering Handbook (CRC Press, 1998). He has been the recipient of several major awards, including the Henry L. Kennedy Award of the ACI, the ACI Concrete Research Council Award, an honorary professorship with the Nanjing Institute of Technology, and is an Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the States of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, and Florida, a chartered engineer overseas, and has been a consultant in structural engineering to agencies throughout the United States.
