Cloth. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. First Edition. Hardback. Previous owners name to inside cover. Slight wear, tear and a couple of repairs to D/J. Discussion of the theories is developed from and illustrated by representative pieces of language data. General principles of scientific methodology are presented, and the discussion ordered to that framework results in a coherent and comprehensive view of linguistic theorizing. The nine twentieth-century theories chosen for discussion are selected primarily on the basis of influence or number of adherents. In choosing a variant of a theory for discussion an effort has been made to select the one that is representative of work within a given approach or the one usually associated with the name of the theory. The initial paragraph of each chapter clarifies the basis of exposition. The omission of variants and, in some cases, of whole theories should not be interepreted as adverse judgment but simply recognition of the voluminous amount of work done on the nature of language in the past sixty years and of the limitation of space in which to treat them. 404 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
