This work provides an introduction to object-oriented concepts as applied to database and knowledge-based systems. The principles of the semantic data modelling are described in depth and this is followed by a description of the application of object-oriented techniques in this area. Separate chapters are devoted to implementational issues, such as persistence and concurrency. The text contains case-studies and commercial and prototype object-oriented database systems are reviewed.
