Since the author is an old hand at C, C++, and other object-oriented langua ges, he begins by fitting Java into a larger perspective on the computing i ndustry. (The author sees Java as the language of choice for many reasons-- mainly its ease of use and cross-platform capabilities.) The book features a straightforward tutorial on how to get started in Java, from writing simp le applications to learning Java's built-in classes. An early chapter on ob ject-oriented programming is particularly adept at showing how Java compare s to other programming languages in its approach to working with objects. B asic types and objects are all explained in good detail. Witty quotes and anecdotes that point out some of the difficulties of worki ng with technology frame each chapter. The author strikes a fine balance be tween real programming expertise and comic relief, and his writing is a not ch above most other writing in the field. However, the author doesn't skimp on technical knowledge--advanced material includes how to use interfaces, exceptions, threads, and the network capabilities of Java.
