Schomberg , a hotelier who gossips like a broken accordion, spreads a tale that Heyst sits on pirate treasure. The rumor summons a three-man morality play: Mr. Jones (a cadaverous gentleman who treats murder like bridge), Ricardo (his ferretish enthusiast), and Pedro (the silent punctuation mark at the end of a sentence you don?t want to finish). They descend on Samburan , Heyst?s private Eden-with-termite-problems, to liberate a fortune that does not exist. What they find is worse: two people trying to build a small republic of kindness amid the steam and mildew. Conrad threads irony like a garrote.
