He and his gang of friends rob, kill and rape their way through a nightmarish future, until the State puts a stop to his riotous excesses. But what will his re-education mean?A dystopian horror, a black comedy, an exploration of choice, A Clockwork Orange is also a work of exuberant invention which created a new language for its characters. This critical edition restores the text of the novel as Anthony Burgess originally wrote it, and includes a glossary of the teen slang 'Nadsat', explanatory notes, pages from the original typescript, interviews, articles and reviews, shedding light on the enduring fascination of the novel's 'sweet and juicy criminality'.Anthony Burgess was born in Manchester in 1917 and educated at Xaverian College and Manchester University. He spent six years in the British Army before becoming a schoolmaster and colonial education officer in Malaya and Brunei. After the success of his Malayan Trilogy, he became a full-time writer in 1959. His books have been published all over the world, and they include The Complete Enderby, Nothing Like the Sun, Napoleon Symphony, Tremor of Intent, Earthly Powers and A Dead Man in Deptford. Anthony Burgess died in London in 1993.Andrew Biswell is the Professor of Modern Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University and the Director of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. His publications include a biography, The Real Life of Anthony Burgess, which won the Portico Prize in 2006. He is currently editing the letters and short stories of Anthony Burgess.
Penguin Decades bring you the novels that helped shape modern Britain. When they were published, some were bestsellers, some were considered scandalous, and others were simply misunderstood. All represent their time and helped define their generation, while today each is considered a landmark work of storytelling. Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange was published in 1962 and has been controversial ever since. It tells the story of fifteen-year-old Alex - whose chief preoccupations are Beethoven's Ninth and ultra-violence - as he and his droogs rampage though a dystopian future seeking thrills, until they come under the control of the state's sinister apparatus.

Paperback. Etat : Good. A Clockwork Orange (1973) by Anthony Burgess ? Penguin Books ISBN: 0140032193 Condition: Good (as sold by Crappy Old Books , where ?Good? means ?still readable; still mildly menacing?) Here?s a cheerful little book about youth culture, free will, and ultraviolence? perfect for curling up with . (That?s irony, in case the milk-plus hasn?t kicked in yet.) A Clockwork Orange is Burgess?s most famous provocation: a slim novel with a jagged grin, written in a slang that feels like it?s been invented to make your brain trip over its own shoelaces and then get up asking for more. You follow Alex?charismatic, appalling, and distressingly articulate?through a near-future England where the nights are loud, the moral compass is optional, and ?a little of the old in-out? is very much not about interior decorating. Burgess doesn?t ease you into this world. He drops you in, hands you the language (Nadsat: part Russian, part street argot, part pure menace), and lets you figure it out the way you figure out a dream: by surrendering to it. Before long you?ll be reading sentences that should be incomprehensible and thinking, with mild horror, yes, that?s exactly what he means. And then comes the real point of the book, the bit that makes it endure beyond the shock: the argument about choice . Burgess isn?t interested only in bad behaviour; he?s interested in what a state will do to ?fix? it, and what?s left of a person when the ability to choose?even the ability to choose wrongly?is removed. It?s a novel that forces you to ask an uncomfortable question: is a ?good? person still good if they?ve been engineered into it? Or are they just? mechanical? Clockwork? The genius (and the joke) is how stylishly it?s all done. The prose is musical. The rhythms are addictive. The book is repellent and seductive at the same time, which is precisely why it works. You?re made complicit through language, through voice, through the uncomfortable fact that Alex is often the most alive thing on the page. You don?t have to like him. You just have to keep listening. This copy is a 1973 Penguin Books edition?proper vintage Penguin: practical, portable, and quietly smug about containing a modern classic that still has the power to unsettle. Condition is Good , from Crappy Old Books , meaning it?s solid, readable, and pleasantly seasoned by decades of shelf life ?perhaps a little rubbing, some page toning, the faint patina of a book that has been passed around with a ?you should read this? warning. Buy it if you like: dystopian fiction with bite, wit, and a nasty little laugh language experiments that actually enhance the story moral philosophy delivered via menace and charisma classics that still feel dangerous in paperback form A Clockwork Orange is short, sharp, and unforgettable: a book that asks whether people can be made ?good? without being made less human, and does it in a voice you won?t shake off easily. In Good condition from Crappy Old Books ?ready to sit on your shelf looking innocent while quietly plotting to invade your vocabulary. N° de réf. du vendeur 5255
