Gertrude Stein was a titan of early feminism and one of the great pioneers of the modernist world. Born in Pennsylvania in 1874, Stein lived through a period of global upheaval, writing groundbreaking literature and supporting emerging poets and artists. Luminaries like Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Ezra Pound, Jean Cocteau, Ernest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald were regular visitors at her famous Paris salon, where she lived with her life partner of forty years, Alice B. Toklas.
Her complex personal beliefs and politics still defy easy categorisation, inspiring controversy to this day. Stein was a one-woman renegade literary movement, and her body of work - including Three Lives, Tender Buttons, The Making of Americans, and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas - broke a long succession of moulds. When she died in 1946, Gertrude Stein was a transcontinental literary icon, and one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.

Vendeur : Crappy Old Books, Barry, Royaume-Uni
Paperback. Etat : Good. Gertrude Stein ? Writings and Lectures 1909?1945 (1971) ? Edited by Patricia Meyerowitz Sold by Crappy Old Books Welcome to the linguistic funhouse of Gertrude Stein?where repetition is revelation, grammar is negotiable, and the sentences wander like jazz riffs at a Paris salon. Edited by Patricia Meyerowitz and published by Penguin in 1971, Writings and Lectures 1909?1945 gathers the essential brain-bending brilliance of one of modernism?s most misunderstood minds. Inside, you?ll find Stein in all her uncompromising glory: experimental prose, poetic oddities, and lectures that read like riddles delivered with absolute conviction. Whether she?s describing Picasso, explaining how to write, or simply repeating herself until you believe her, Stein challenges the very idea of what literature is?and makes you feel slightly guilty for enjoying it. Condition: Pages yellowed like a madeleine left in the sun. Cover faintly bruised by decades of neglect and admiration. But the words? Still offbeat, still infuriating, still oddly intoxicating. Crappy Old Books: Because sometimes brilliance comes in tatty paperbacks that smell like an old library and existential dread. N° de réf. du vendeur 3558
