Arnold Zweig's "The Case of Sergeant Grischa" is the second novel in his "Great War of the White Men" series about World War I. The plot, based on a true story, revolves around the hapless Russian soldier, Sergeant Grischa. Grischa is laboring away in a prisoner of war camp, but, anticipating the end of the war, Grischa can't wait to be reunited with his wife and daughter. He escapes and while on the run from the Germans falls in with a motley assortment of other escapees, criminals and deserters. Worried about what will happen to him if he is recaptured and discovered to be an escaped prisoner, Grischa assumes the identity of a dead Russian. Well, it turns out that he is recaptured and the Russian he is masquerading as was a known deserter. The Germans, who are facing their own problems with deserters, have issued a policy to execute any deserter. In this simple case of mistaken identity, Grischa is sentenced to death. While he is able to reestablish his true identity, it is too late, Grischa is caught in the wheels of military justice. The spiritual and moral struggles of the various characters involved in this passion play are what add depth to the story. N° de réf. du vendeur 33af8f21-af42-4680-a42a-db9eda3a4565

Paperback. Etat : Good. The Case of Sergeant Grischa ? Arnold Zweig (Penguin Books, 1986 edition) Here?s a battered old Penguin paperback of Arnold Zweig?s The Case of Sergeant Grischa , a First World War classic first published in 1927. This isn?t a cheery tale of heroism and gallant charges ? it?s a grim, satirical, and deeply human story about a Russian POW who escapes only to be sucked into the bureaucratic machinery of the German war machine. Think Kafka meets the trenches. This 1986 Penguin edition has the cover design you probably remember from your university reading list, and yes, our copy has definitely been read before (several times, judging by the spine creases). Pages may be tanned, corners may be scuffed, but the words are all there ? and still sharper than any bayonet. Perfect if you?re into classic anti-war novels, Penguin orange spines, or just enjoy the smell of slightly foxed paper on a rainy evening. As always at Crappy Old Books: it?s a bit scruffy, but it?s honest. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. IT IN NO WAY DEMINISHED FROM THE READING. IF YOU WANT A PRISTINE BOOK, PLEASE FIND ANOTHER BOOK IN BETTER CONDITION SOMEWHERE ELSE. N° de réf. du vendeur 4195
