Synopsis

This is a classic. I first encountered it over 60 years ago, and have never forgotten the impression it made on me. I love the clarity & compactness, and behind it the author's wide erudition and deep sympathy. Strongly recommended. Not so many years ago, and moved by the words on p42, I enjoyed the extraordinary privilege of visiting Sarnath, where the Master walked & preached the first sermon (now marked by an ancient tree, a Hellenistic stupa and a flourishing Zen community), and was able to experience something of the peace of which Humphreys writes.
