Set in the years following the collapse of Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, the novel follows Pavel, a writer navigating the freedoms and confusions of a society reinventing itself. Around him swirl friendships, marriages, political ideals, private compromises and lingering memories of the past. Klíma understands that history rarely arrives with a clean break. Even when oppressive systems disappear, the habits, hopes and disappointments they leave behind continue to shape the people who survived them.
